Almost a third of the Blackwater coal mine in central Queensland is being sold to the Japanese steel giant as part of a joint venture with Whitehaven Coal.
As part of the agreements announced on Thursday, Whitehaven has entered into separate offtake agreements with Nippon Steel and JFE Steel.
