Former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has fired a new broadside against the government over its changed strategic direction after it was confirmed that Wellington was consulting with AUKUS members about New Zealand's participation in the military cooperation treaty.

Under the agreement, Australia will have nuclear-powered submarines by the 2030s and begin building its own submarines in the 2040s. The aim is to curb China's growing influence in the Pacific.
