Claims of interference as Moldova's EU referendum stalls

A slim majority of 50.17 percent voted “yes” in Moldova's crucial referendum on joining the European Union, near-final results show, after President Maia Sandu said the two votes were marred by “unprecedented” outside interference .

The narrow result – less than 1.5 percent of the ballot papers still have to be counted on Monday – is anything but a resounding confirmation of the EU-friendly path that Sandu pursued for four years at the head of the small ex-Soviet republic between Russia and the West.
